Royce West Announces Senate Bid
The Texas State Senator is ready for a change
State Senator West announced Monday he will challenge Senator John Cornyn for his seat in 2020.
In front of a packed room of supporters West said, “When you begin to think about this country and how it’s divided, you’ve got to have people that are willing to step up and step out from behind leadership that’s failed to leadership in this country. And the fact of the matter is I’m that person to do that”.
However, he is not the only Democrat challenging Cornyn so West will have his work cut out for him. But with twenty-six years of experience under his belt, he seems ready and eager for the challenge.
- Texas native
- Received his Bachelor and Master’s Degrees from University of Texas and his J.D. from the University of Houston.
- Former Chief Felony Prosecutor for Dallas County
- Managing Partner at West & Associates
- Married to Carol West
As a State Senator, West has had his hands in just about every kind of legislation that you can think of and from all appearances, he’s a Democrat the party can be proud of.
He supports the ACA and wants to work to further expand health coverage for all Americans. West wants to focus tax breaks on the middle class and small businesses, not the top-earners. He has a long voting record of helping to improve educational opportunities and resources, assisting veterans and promoting economic opportunity.
While not the only fish in the Democrat sea, he is a pretty good catch!
He’ll have to work tirelessly though should he obtain the Democrat nomination. While Cornyn certainly looks as though he is vulnerable, no Democrat has won a general election for statewide office in Texas since 1994. It’s not impossible, as Beto O’Rourke nearly proved, but it’s not exactly the easiest state to be Blue in.
