Rand Paul Vows to Filibuster Mike Pompeo, Gina Haspel
Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, Paul vowed to filibuster the appointments.
“I’ll do whatever it takes, and that includes filibuster,” Paul said in response to Mike Pompeo and Gina Haspel’s nominations. Mike Pompeo is set to replace Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Gina Haspel is looking to fill the shoes left behind by Pompeo as Director of the CIA. Paul states his objection is due to Pompeo’s support for regime change abroad and Haspel’s history with CIA torture.
Paul even called up other Senators, including Democrats, to join him. However, Paul hasn’t escaped the normal criticism for breaking ranks. Perhaps the most interesting comes from Liz Cheney. She is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney. She tweeted that Paul is “defending and sympathizing with terrorists.” Still, Paul did not back down.
Paul responded on Sunday, calling the tweet “juvenile”. He went on to day that both Cheney’s “could spend a lifetime trying to justify” the death incurred as a result of the Iraq War. “Until they’ve proved that they know anything about the world, I think they probably just ought to be quiet,” Paul said.
