House Intel Committee Threatens to Subpoena the White House
On Thursday, the House Intel Committee threatened to subpoena the White House over Comey documentation.
It would seem that once again, President Trump is in the middle of a political firestorm of his own making. Only this time, the consequences are not merely public opinion.
Reportedly, top Republican and Democrat’s leading the investigation into Russian interference, the president’s tweet that he “did not make, and [does] not have, any such recordings” did not satisfy committee. Now, they are demanding additional information and will go to any lengths to secure it.
A letter sent to the White House by Rep. Mike Conaway (R-TX) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) said that “should the White House not respond fully, the committee will consider using compulsory process to ensure a satisfactory response.”
This of coarse stem from a tweet from Trump himself back in May. Trump tweeted, in regards to Comey, that “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”
The House committee of coarse requested “any recordings, memoranda, or other documents memorializing” the president’s interactions with Comey.
Then, the President tweeted last week that he had made no “tapes”. That however, has not put the matter to rest. The White House has tried to defer the lawmakers to the President’s tweet as a way to make themselves clear but it has not worked.
“By only referring to the President’s statement, the White House’s letter stops short of clarifying for the Committee whether the White House has any responsive recordings, memoranda, or other documents,” Conaway and Schiff said Thursday.
Clearly, Trump’s quick temper has made an already bad situation worse. How the White House will continue to respond one can only know as we watch the drama unfold.
