Turkey Blocks Wikipedia

Citing a “smear campaign”, Turkey has blocked the online encyclopedia.

According to the Anadolu Agency, Turkey has blocked access to Wikipedia. The reason given is that the site links the nation to terror activity. Some articles and comments showed Turkey “in coordination and aligned” with terrorist groups,

“It has become part of an information source which is running a smear campaign against Turkey in the international arena,” the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications said.
Turkey warned Wikipedia to remove such content but the nonprofit encyclopedia refused.
Once Wikipedia meets Turkey’s demands, the access ban will be lifted, it said.
Many observers say Turkey has taken a authoritarian turn when it comes to free access of information. This is not the first time that Turkey has taken to blocking websites. In the past, it has blocked sites such as Twitter and Youtube as well.
With Erdogan’s now expanded powers, many fear there will be more to come.
